ASU AFS Newsletter March 2026
Good morning Sun Devils,
I hope you’ve been well, despite the record-breaking heat sweeping through the Valley this week. This month’s newsletter will be short and to-the-point, updating you all on our ongoing operations and some exciting new developments. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have questions or seek to be further involved. We are always looking for new hands on deck.
New website: Earlier this year we launched our brand new website. You can view it here. The website displays our mission/vision, profiles members of our board, republishes all of our newsletters, and provides pathways for new members to join and current and prospective members to donate to our cause.
Board: We recently announced our inaugural board, consisting of Sun Devils ranging from the class of 2015 to the class of 2023: Joe Pitts, Chairman (ASU ‘23), Landon Miller, Operations Director (ASU ‘22), Jen Springman, Boardmember (ASU ‘16), and Celeste Robertson, Boardmember (ASU ‘15). We are also pleased to announce that Sean Paige (ASU ‘85), one of our original cofounders, is joining us as a senior advisor.
Mission and vision: We’ve spiffed up and revised our mission and vision. See below—
What do we believe?
We believe that ASU is one of the world’s premier universities, and that it can be made better by committing itself to and embodying:
Academic freedom.
Faculty and academics require academic freedom, within appropriate bounds, to expand our shared knowledge.
Free speech on campus.
Students deserve to have their voices heard on campus – so that they can better learn how to be citizens.
Academic excellence.
Students should be held to a high standard of excellence, rejecting mediocrity.
What do we do?
In order to influence administrators, lawmakers, & members of the Arizona Board of Regents, we:
Host timely events.
ASU AFS hosts in-person and virtual events with relevant guests to build a community of members.
Maintain a monthly newsletter.
ASU AFS publishes a monthly newsletter with organization updates, relevant news, and more.
Cultivate relationships with decision-makers.
ASU AFS meets with decision-makers at ABOR and ASU to represent student interests.
Membership: Interested in becoming a member or recruiting some of your friends? You can sign up to be a member here. It’s free.
Giving: We need funding to accomplish our mission of hosting timely events and cultivating relationships with decision-makers at Arizona State University and the Arizona Board of Regents. If you are interested in giving, or know someone or some organization interested in giving, please contact us at asualumniforfreespeech@gmail.com. Donations are tax-deductible, and should be addressed to the 1912 Institute (with whom we have a partnership). Some additional links that may be helpful:

Upcoming events: Expect further details in the coming months on new events taking place this year across Arizona. We are planning to host at least two events in 2026.
Recent news:
UA President Refuses to Sign Traditional Shared Governance Memorandum: University of Arizona president Suresh Garimella has refused to sign a memorandum of understanding that details shared governance standards and processes at the university.
The Goldwater Institute released a report on ASU’s Barrett, the Honors College. According to the study’s authors, “Over 70% of all Barrett course sections for the mandatory “The Human Event” (HON 272) reviewed by Goldwater pushed “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) content, including anti-capitalist, anti-Israeli, and sexually explicit “LGBTQ” material.”
ASU works with Freeport-McMoRan to strengthen supply of a critical mineral — copper: To strengthen retention and training, Freeport turned to the W. P. Carey School of Business, building on its long-standing research partnership with ASU. Together, they developed a 12-month plan to refine onboarding.
